Predicting Piano Chords

Predicting chords in songs is easy and yet at the same time, it isn’t. It starts to become easy with time and practice, but when you start out you may find it rather difficult. So what are you to do? It all lies in the form of a song. Music has form. It is very precise and it follows a language that does not change. The language is as old as the music itself, so your odds of prediction are rather good in this case.

The form of music, piano, whatever you want to think of it as, is structured, organized, and thus allows you to follow a set pattern. The form of music, holds up this structure, and gives you the ability to do your chord predictions. Predicting chords, takes some time, so let’s get started.

No matter what key your song is in, there are certain primary chords that you will see. These are chords that occur much more frequently than others. It is as if the whole song is built around that chord. Chords are precise, and they follow a pattern. Depending on what chord you play, you will typically play only one of two chords following it. When you break apart a chord, you have 3 notes normally. If you are playing the G chord, the other notes in the G chord may be in fact, your next chord.

So if you had to guess, this would be your guess. See how it works? Take some time now and try this at your piano. Play C, E, and G for the C chord. Your next two chords could either be G or E, depending on the tune. You should be able to figure this out with some time. It just takes a little practice.

How do you know which chord it is going to be? There is a trick to the madness. Learn the melody of the song. If the song is played in E then your chord will most likely be C, since the G chord does not include C. Does this make sense? Good luck and keep on practicing your chords.
