It is as if the whole song is built around that chord. Chords are precise, and they follow a pattern. Depending on what chord you play, you will typically play only one of two chords following it. When you break apart a chord, you have 3 notes normally. If you are playing the G chord, the other notes in the G chord may be in fact, your next chord.

So if you had to guess, this would be your guess. See how it works? Take some time now and try this at your piano. Play C, E, and G for the C chord. Your next two chords could either be G or E, depending on the tune. You should be able to figure this out with some time. It just takes a little practice.
